Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo: ”The conservative right wing will be destroyed...Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the National Power Emergency Response Committee, should not get close to the party” (South Korea)
Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo has spoken out against Han Dong-hoon, former head of the People Power Party's emergency response committee, who resigned to take responsibility for the party's crushing defeat in the April 10 general elections, saying, "You should stay away from the party.
Mayor Hong responded to a message posted on the online communication platform "Youth's Dream" on the 20th, saying, "Let's give former Chairman Han Dong-hoon one more chance."
The poster wrote, "The reason for the defeat in the general election is that Lee Jae-myung, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea (opposition party), who lost in the presidential election, is also in the position of chairman," in a post titled,
It is not just Han Dong-hoon who is the fault of former Chairman Han, but there seems to be no reason why he should not take on the role of the next party leader, as he enjoys overwhelming support from 45% of party members.
"I believe that the cause of the defeat was not the fault of former Chairman Han alone," he said. "He also said, 'The 5-0 coach,' Guus Hiddink, the star of the 2002 World Cup semi-finals,
"I have given him at least a year of time. I hope people don't hate Han too much, as he was a novice in politics and did his best."
In response, Mayor Hong said, "The mistake of former Chairman Han Dong-hoon led to the worst defeat in history. Former Chairman Han should have called the general election a presidential election.
He is a political prosecutor who has made us suffer hell, and who has betrayed President Yoon. He should not get any closer to the power of the people. Please refrain from asking such questions.
Other comments on the message board also showed sharp reactions to Han. Mayor Hong said, "Even after suffering such a terrible experience, the outrageous behavior of blindly following him is a sign of the conservative right wing.
"The party has been destroyed. It was Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo who gave him the nomination, so he can just say lip service," he said.
He also said, "The current approval rating means nothing. In the presidential primary election in August 2022, I will be at 4% and candidate Yoon will be at 5%.
At the time, my approval rating was 40%, but two and a half months later, my approval rating was 48%, and candidate Yoon's was 37%. Korean politics can change in an instant due to campaigning. Today, I would like to express all my thoughts about former Chairman Han in this reply.
We will sort it out accordingly."
