The industry ministers of Japan and South Korea held a formal meeting in Tokyo for the first time in six years and agreed to strengthen government and private economic cooperation based on the trust they share in core values.
The announcement comes as South Korea marks the first anniversary of its recovery. South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, "Minister Ahn Deok-keun of Trade, Industry and Energy visited Tokyo on the 22nd and met with Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Takeshi Saito, and held talks with the leaders of both countries.
The two sides discussed implementing the agreed items and future cooperation plans," he said. This was the first official meeting between the Japanese and South Korean industry ministers in six years since 2018.
Both Japan and the ROK highly appreciated the fact that business cooperation between the two countries has been gaining momentum through intensified summit diplomacy, and decided to encourage cooperation between the two governments and business communities.
In his opening remarks at the meeting, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn said, "South Korea and Japan are making great strides as partners that can trust and maintain each other. At present, we face multiple global crises.
"In order to overcome this difficult situation, close partnership and cooperation between Korea and Japan is extremely important," said Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Saito. "Japan and Korea share fundamental values and have a strong presence in various fields in the international community.
"Japan and China are important neighbors with whom we should cooperate in the next generation of issues," he said. "Our two countries have many common issues, such as industrial sectors that are highly complementary, and securing energy sources and achieving decarbonization, both of which are highly dependent on overseas sources.
"There is a lot of potential," he said.
