The Pohang Maritime Police Station reported that the incident occurred at around 6:40 a.m. on the 25th at a location 1.8 kilometers east of Homigot-myeon, Nam-gu, Pohang City.
The 20-ton fishing boat A discovered a dead whale caught in a fixed net in the sea off the coast of Korea and reported it to the Coast Guard.
The whale was confirmed to be a male minke whale measuring 4.1 metres in length.
However, the Coast Guard said no traces of illegal fishing were found. The whale was sold on consignment to the Guryongpo Fisheries Cooperative Association for 55 million won (approximately 6.2 million yen).
Illegal whaling is punishable by up to three years in prison and/or a fine of up to 30 million won (US$32,000) under the Fisheries Industry Act and the Marine Ecosystem Conservation and Management Act.
A Pohang Coast Guard official said, "If you find a dead whale on the coast or at sea, please report it to the Coast Guard immediately."
