Supreme Court awards 10 million won in compensation to Voice of Seoul for releasing recording of Kim Kun-hee's phone call = South Korea
Kim Kun-hee, wife of President Yoon Seok-yeol, filed a lawsuit against the online media outlet 'Voice of Seoul' for publishing the contents of their phone calls.
On the 25th, according to the legal profession, the Supreme Court's first division ruled that Kim's lawsuit against Seoul Voice CEO Baek Eun-jung and reporter Lee Myung-soo for damages was a success.
The original ruling in favor of the plaintiff in part was finalized on the same day. Reporter Lee claimed to have recorded a seven-hour phone conversation with Mrs. Kim in January 2022, ahead of the presidential election, and cooperated with MBC to make it public.
Before the broadcast, Mrs. Kim filed a provisional injunction against MBC and Voice of Seoul to stop the release of the recording. However, the court only allowed the release of some of the content.
When MBC and Voice of Seoul released the contents of the call, Mrs. Kim said, "It was an illegal recording and a broadcast that ignored the purpose of the court's provisional injunction. It violated my personality, honor, and privacy rights.

The court ordered the Kim family to pay 10 million won (approximately 1.13 million yen) in compensation. Voice of Seoul appealed the decision.
However, the Supreme Court saw no problem with the conclusion of the original ruling and decided to hold a hearing on the merits.
The court decided to immediately dismiss the case without holding that the plaintiff should not continue the proceedings, and the verdict was finalized.
