South Korea's Lee Jae-myung and Cho Kuk pledge to hold regular meetings to push for joint bill
Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, the largest opposition party in South Korea, and Cho Kuk, chairman of the Fatherland Reform Party, held an informal dinner on the 25th to discuss the opening of the 22nd National Assembly, which is scheduled to open next month.
The two parties agreed to hold regular meetings to advance joint bills and policies in the Diet. The two parties aim to deepen cooperation through frank dialogue, regardless of the Diet agenda.
The Democratic Party's Public Relations Office announced on the same day that "the parties' political affairs chiefs will hold discussions on the content and procedural order of joint bill policies between the two parties."
He also said, "Chairman Lee expects the Fatherland Reform Party to take the lead in reforming Korean society, and Chairman Cho expects the Democratic Party to fulfill its responsibilities as the ruling party."
The meeting, which began at 6:30 pm and lasted for around two and a half hours, was the first direct dialogue between the two leaders since the general election.
In a comment to reporters before the meeting, Lee said, "I contacted (Cho) first."
He is a close friend and there are many hot topics to discuss, so I suggested we have dinner together."
Regarding the purpose of the plan, he said, "The Democratic Party and the Fatherland Reform Party are actually sharing roles.
"We held this election. Therefore, we will likely exchange information on the future political situation," he emphasized.
The Democratic Party of Korea won 171 seats in the general election, while the Fatherland Reform Party secured 12 seats.
