South Korean ambassador to Russia ”attends” Putin's inauguration ceremony... South Korea begins ”relationship management” with China and Russia
On the 7th (local time), Lee Do-hoon represented the Korean side at the 5th inauguration ceremony of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The South Korean ambassador to Russia attended the meeting. This month, the South Korean government announced plans to strengthen ties with China and Russia, including promoting high-level exchanges with China.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Lee attended President Putin's inauguration ceremony at the Kremlin. The Kremlin said,
"I have also invited the ambassadors of countries that I have designated as 'unfriendly' to the inauguration ceremony," he said. This year's attendance marks the first time that 20 of the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) and Japan have attended Putin's inauguration ceremony.
This means that South Korea has acted differently from the other countries that chose not to participate in the "boycott" talks. A US State Department spokesman said, "We do not believe that the (Russian presidential) election was free and fair.
Japan criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine and explained why it will not send an ambassador to the inauguration ceremony. Unlike these countries, South Korea accepted Russia's invitation and sent its ambassador to attend.
The South Korean government said that the voting in Donetsk and other areas occupied by Russia in Ukraine was a violation of international law, but did not comment on the results of the presidential election.
Since taking office, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol has focused his diplomatic efforts on improving Japan-US-South Korea and Japan-South Korea relations. Meanwhile, South Korea-Russia relations have stagnated to the worst since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
The Yun administration, now in its third year since inauguration, has been working to “secure its diplomatic position within the strategic composition of China, Russia and North Korea, and to protect our own citizens in Russia and Korean companies operating in Russia.”
Regarding this, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official said, "There are various major issues between South Korea and Russia, so it is necessary to manage the South Korea-Russia relationship."
We also took into consideration the necessity."
