It has been found that many Korean War memorial facilities in the United States still refer to the area as "Sea of Japan" (Korean name: Donghae, East Sea) exclusively.
However, thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and the Korean Veterans Association, the "Sea of Japan" and the "East Sea" are gradually being unified.
The number of cases is increasing. Until now, the South Korean government has made various efforts to use the joint name "Sea of Japan" and "East Sea" in the next generation, but has not been able to bring about any significant change.
However, over the past year, four locations, including the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Maryland and the Korean War Memorial Park in Ohio, have changed their spelling from "Sea of Japan" to also use "East Sea."
This is believed to be because the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of South Korea requested, through its overseas diplomatic missions, local governments and veterans' associations in the United States to include the inscription, and the U.S. side accepted the request.
Despite Korea's request for "dual inscription," the U.S. side has continued to use the "exclusive" inscription for the Sea of Japan.
The United States has been ambiguous, aware of Japan's opposition to the move. However, as the trend toward improving Japan-Korea relations has been building over the past year, the United States is reportedly gradually changing its stance.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the ROK plans to continue promoting the use of the term "East Sea" in Korean War memorial facilities in the United States that currently use the exclusive term "Sea of Japan."
