Ahead of the Japan-China-South Korea summit, Japan and China are experiencing ”military tensions” - South Korean reports
On the 26th, the day before the Japan-China-South Korea summit, Japan's Self-Defense Forces conducted the country's largest artillery exercise, and China began maritime patrols around the Senkaku Islands.
According to Kyodo News and Sankei Shimbun, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force held the largest live-fire training in Japan on the same day at the Higashi Fuji Training Area in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The exercise, which was held in the Fuji Comprehensive Firepower Exercise, is a strike drill conducted by the Japanese government, which is considering strengthening defense capabilities for the southwest islands, including the Senkaku Islands, with Chinese maritime advances in mind.
The exercise was conducted under the assumption that the Japanese government would be fighting back against an enemy that invades the islands. The Sankei Shimbun reported that the purpose of the exercise was to demonstrate the defense capabilities of the islands.
Meanwhile, China conducted a maritime patrol around the Senkaku Islands on the same day.
According to the Kyodo News, four vessels belonging to the China Coast Guard were spotted sailing in the contact area outside Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands.
