A woman who claimed to have been sexually harassed by the head priest of Haeinsa Temple was found not guilty in court - South Korea
A woman who claimed to have been sexually harassed by Monk Hyun Woo, the former head priest of Haeinsa Temple in South Korea, was found guilty in the first instance.
On the 29th, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Defendant A (female), who was indicted on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act, to one year and six months in prison with suspended sentence.
The court overturned the original two-year sentence and declared the defendant “not guilty.” Defendant A posted on an online bulletin board in March 2018, “After drinking, Monk Hyun Woo took me to a motel and sexually harassed me.
Defendant A said, "Monk Hyun Woo entered the motel room and drank alcohol on the table next to the bed. He offered me some too, but I was scared and didn't take a sip."
"I said, 'Let's go back to Haeinsa Temple,' but the monk said, 'You can't go back until you sober up,' and lay down on the bed. He then grabbed my hand, forced me to lie down, and started touching my body," she said.
Defendant A also gave an interview to a Korean investigative news program in May of the same year. Monk Hyun Woo-un filed a criminal complaint against Defendant A and the program's production team, claiming that the contents of the program were lies.
The prosecution decided not to indict the program's production staff and set defendant A's trial for January 2020.
In this appeal, the court ruled that "regarding the sexual harassment alleged by Defendant A,
The contents of the statements are largely consistent, and even if some of the details have changed, this is not enough evidence to prove that they are false.
It's difficult," he explained.
