Care worker assaults elderly person with dementia...Family's anger after seeing CCTV footage = South Korea
A visiting care worker in his 70s is on trial for habitually assaulting an elderly man in his 80s with dementia, and CCTV footage of the incident has been made public.
According to MBC on the 4th, a son, Mr. A, employed a care worker, Mr. B, in his 70s, to look after his mother, who has dementia, in March of last year. Mr. B visited the home and gave his mother a bath,
The family learned of Mr. B's violent behavior at the end of November last year. Mr. B's actions were clearly captured on the CCTV installed in the room.
The footage showed six months of assaults and abuse, with over 30 cases of assault confirmed in just one month of footage.
The video posted by A through MBC shows B punching his mother in the face, arms, etc., while she is lying down.
They kicked her and hit her with a long stick. Ms. A said, "There were bruises on (her) mother's arms," and "I thought that those bruises were caused by the thin skin of older people."
However, when asked about the traces of assault, Mr. B reportedly said, "I was just caring for her and I didn't mean to hit her."
The family lamented that the care worker had even raised her salary because she said the job was too hard.
The visiting treatment center that introduced the care worker revealed that the victim had no criminal history related to abuse, and that despite providing education on preventing abuse, they were unable to find out about the crime.
The district office in charge is considering imposing administrative sanctions such as suspending the operation of the elderly welfare facility to which the nursing care worker belongs for six months.
The prosecution arrested Mr. B on suspicion of violating the Elderly Welfare Law and sought a one-year prison sentence.
He is due to be sentenced on the 20th of this month.
