South Korean First Lady attends opening ceremony of Children's Environment and Ecology Education Center... emphasizes importance of pet protection
Kim Geon-hee, wife of South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol, opens the new Children's Environment and Ecology Education Center at the Yongsan Children's Garden in celebration of World Environment Day.
At the ceremony, held on the 5th, Kim watered the hawthorn that zoologist and environmental activist Dr. Jane Goodall planted during her visit to Korea in July last year and planted flower seeds.
They also participated in events such as flying paper airplanes with stickers on them to celebrate the opening of the education center. Students from an elementary school that was selected as a model school aiming for carbon neutrality also attended the ceremony.
I visited the Jane Goodall Special Exhibition at the Education Center with my children. During her previous visit to Korea, Dr. Goodall said, "Trees are living things, so their leaves produce oxygen, which helps us.
"Leaves can also breathe. Therefore, when you touch a leaf with your lips, you can feel that all life is interconnected," he said, conveying to the children the importance of feeling connected to nature.
Kim also introduced his pet dog Saerom and three kittens born from a rescued stray cat, and stressed the importance of protecting life. Kim said, "Protecting stray cats and dogs is a way of protecting the ecosystem.
"It's one of the important ways to do this," he emphasized. Minister of Environment Han Hwa-jin and Director of the National Institute of Biological Resources Seo Min-Hwan also attended the ceremony.
