Seoul City's transformed water purification tower area to feature large trophy-shaped artwork and gardens (South Korea)
The Songpa district of Seoul has announced that it has renovated the area around the water purification tower in Garak Market, which had been abandoned for 20 years since it ceased operation, into a tree-lined garden.
The district has partnered with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Corporation, the owner of the land, to commission the water purification tower to be designed by world-famous American artist Ned Kahn.
The exterior of the water purification tower was covered with 330,000 tiny pieces swaying in the wind, expressing the characteristics of rain created by atmospheric circulation.
The Roffey-type work creates a variety of landscapes depending on the wind and sunlight. Inside, works by 100 local residents depicting the cross-section of the sea are on display.
The green space around the water purification tower, which had been marred by abandoned waste, now offers visitors a sense of greenery and peace.
The park has created the Garden of Harmony, which includes the tallest Taegeukgi in Seoul at 55 meters, the Art Plaza where visitors can appreciate artworks, and the Deck Rest Area where visitors can enjoy contemplation and conversation.
The district plans to extend the sidewalk from Seokchon Lake to the Garak Market intersection and create a garden by planting seasonal flowers, including cherry blossoms, through the Songpa Avenue Garden Creation Project.
The plan is to attract visitors from both inside and outside Japan.
