South Korean Foreign Minister presides over ”cyber threat” meeting at UN Security Council as ”chair country”
On the 20th of this month, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-youl, as chair of the UN Security Council, will host an open debate on cybersecurity.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 17th, Minister Cho will personally preside over an open Security Council debate on the topic of "cyberthreats and international peace and security" from the 19th to the 22nd as chair of the Security Council.
In the upcoming public discussion, Cho will visit the United Nations Headquarters in New York. During the discussion, he shared his concerns about the growing sophistication of cyber threats that could pose a threat to international peace and security, and expressed his concern about the possibility of North Korea developing virtual currencies and military
The statement is likely to emphasize that North Korea is threatening the international nuclear and non-proliferation regime by using malicious cyber activities, such as stealing technology, to raise funds for its illicit nuclear and missile programs.
A South Korean Foreign Ministry official said, "We hope to raise UN member states' awareness of cyber threats (through the open discussions)," and "We want the Security Council to take appropriate and timely action against new types of security threats."
