Should ordinary people perform CPR or not? ... ”It is important to do it proactively” = Korea
A study in South Korea has found that survival rates are significantly improved when CPR is performed by non-medical personnel or emergency personnel.
On the 19th, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that a man who had been taken to the hospital after suffering sudden cardiac arrest in the first half of last year
The results of the 'Acute Cardiac Arrest Survey in the First Half of 2023', which covered 16,391 cases (98.8%) out of 16,592 patients, were announced.
The survey revealed that the causes of acute cardiac arrest were myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, stroke, and other illnesses.
Most of the cases were caused by accidents, at 77.4%, while 21.7% were caused by factors other than illness, such as falls, choking, and transportation accidents. Nearly half of the cases occurred at home, at 48.4%.
The survival rate for patients with acute cardiac arrest was 8.8% (1,442 people), up 1.0 percentage point from the same survey in 2022.
CPR by non-medical personnel before arriving at the hospital
There were 4,258 patients with acute cardiac arrest who underwent CPR. The success rate of CPR by laypeople was calculated to be 29.8%. In addition, the number of survivors when CPR was performed by laypeople was 597, and the number of patients with improved brain function was 1.
Of these, 425 people recovered. The survival rate was 14.0%, and the brain function recovery rate was 10.0%. On the other hand, for the 1,807 people for whom CPR was not administered by laypeople, the survival rate was 8.2% (149.
The survival rate was 1.7 times higher and the rate of brain function recovery was 2.2 times higher when ordinary people performed CPR compared to when they did not.
Ji Young-mi, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, "In order to sustainably improve the survival rate and brain function recovery rate of patients with acute cardiac arrest, it is important to actively perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We will continue to encourage the general public to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
"We will continue to convey the importance of pulmonary resuscitation so that the rate at which it is performed can be improved."
