South Korean government: ”2025 medical school enrollment quota not up for discussion... Withdraw suspension of clinics”
The South Korean government has called for dialogue with the medical community and said, "The 2025 medical school enrollment quota is not up for discussion." The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on the same day that it will hold a special committee for the medical community to promote fair medical care.
After the first meeting of the committee, he said, "The government is open to discussions at any time, regardless of format or agenda. I would like the Korean Medical Association to also come to the dialogue table without any conditions and participate in the discussion on pending medical issues."
He also emphasized that the procedures for the 2025 medical school enrollment quota have already been completed and are not subject to discussion.
The special committee then stated that it was willing to participate in the parliamentary consultations, including the 2025 quota, and that it welcomed the government's view that "dialogue is possible regardless of the number of seats."
The Ministry of Health and Welfare made it clear that it was opposed to this. The Ministry of Health and Welfare stated that the special committee on health and welfare had decided to “remove the medical school at Yonsei University and the medical school at Ulsan Medical University” on the same day.
Regarding the statement that "We will respect the suspension plan decided by the hospital. We agreed that going forward, rather than carrying out individual struggles in each workplace, we will work together to set up a systematic struggle plan,"
The Ministry of Health and Welfare urged the medical community to withdraw the simultaneous closure of clinics. "Yesterday, the Seoul National University School of Medicine and Seoul National University Hospital emergency response committee decided to 'cancel the indefinite closure,' and the medical association also expressed its intention to hold a dialogue," the ministry said.
We hope that other hospitals that have announced their closures will also retract their decision to close." Professors at Severance Hospital, a training hospital for Yonsei University's medical school, announced on the 27th that they would close indefinitely.
Professors at Seoul Asan Hospital, a training hospital for the Ulsan University School of Medicine, have also decided to close for one week starting on the 4th of next month.
