13 killed and injured in tragic traffic accident near Seoul City Hall Station (South Korea)
On July 1 at around 9:30 pm, a major traffic accident involving pedestrians occurred at an intersection near Seoul City Hall Station, leaving nine people dead and four seriously injured.
The death toll, which was initially six, rose to more than six after a doctor at the hospital determined that the driver had died after the car crashed into pedestrians in the vicinity.
At a second press conference near Chocho Station, they announced that the number of casualties had risen to 13, of which nine had died. Three of the seriously injured died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The accident occurred when a car driven by a man in his 60s ran in the wrong direction, rear-ended a BMW and a Sonata, and then collided with a pedestrian waiting at a crosswalk.
The driver was arrested at the scene, but was taken to the hospital due to his injuries. The passenger was also taken to the same hospital. Fire department officials received a report that "10 people had collapsed" immediately after the accident, and at 9:30 p.m.
They rushed to the scene within 3 minutes. 37 vehicles and 134 personnel were deployed to the scene to deal with the accident. According to witnesses, a Genesis vehicle was traveling the wrong way, crashing into a BMW and a Sonata, then hitting a pedestrian.
At present, there is no evidence that the driver of the accident was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The driver claims that the car suddenly accelerated, but some witnesses
"It was not a sudden acceleration," he testified. The victims were three men in their 30s, two in their 40s, and two in their 50s. Fire department officials are taking the nine who died to a temporary mortuary and the injured to Shinmura.
The victims were taken to Severance Hospital, the National Medical Center, Seoul National University Hospital, and the Red Cross Hospital. President Yoon Seok-yeol called for the government to do everything in its power to rescue and treat the victims.
