A car traveling the wrong way crashed into a sidewalk, killing nine people and injuring four. A man who witnessed the incident told a media outlet, "There was a woman in the passenger seat of the car. Her age was about 14.
"She looked to be in her 60s or 70s," he said, "She didn't try to help anyone, she was only concerned about the driver." Another witness, Mr. B, also said there was a female passenger in the assailant's vehicle, "She was wearing white clothes.
"It was a woman wearing a hoodie. She said that people were dying and her clothes couldn't stop the bleeding," he said, adding, "The victims were on the sidewalk and all of them died."
Mr. C, who was at the scene, also described the horrific scene, saying, "After the car passed, all the people were lying on the road."
The driver and his wife are currently claiming that the car suddenly accelerated, but witnesses have spoken out, saying that the car "was not suddenly accelerating." The driver's wife told the media, "The car was hitting everything and I was going to die too.
"I thought so," she said, "My husband is a bus driver, so he has to drive every day. He didn't have a drop of alcohol."
He also claimed that the car "suddenly accelerated and started going in the wrong direction."
However, people who witnessed the incident before and after the traffic accident emphasized to the media that "there was definitely no sudden acceleration."
Mr. D, who witnessed the accident on his way home, said, "If the vehicle suddenly accelerated, it should not have slowed down, but the vehicle stopped in front of the pedestrian crossing.
"The car that caused the accident was seen slowing down and coming to a stop immediately after the accident on security camera footage.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident and his wife, the passenger, have been taken to Seoul National University Hospital. Police are reviewing the driver's statement and security camera and dashcam footage.
The government plans to conduct a rigorous investigation through various means, including through the investigation into the matter.
