In the early hours of July 2nd, Shanghai Airlines flight FM871 (Shanghai-Marseille) carrying 242 passengers departed from Shanghai Pudong International Airport. This flight is the first scheduled direct flight between China and southern France.

The new "Shanghai-Marseille" route (FM871/FM872) will operate three round trips per week (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday). The flight takes about 12 hours.
Previously, Chinese tourists had to pass through a third-tier city to travel to Marseille from within the country, but this latest opening has made it easier to travel between China and southern France.
China and France are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year, and Shanghai and Marseille have been sister cities since 1973.
