A bill to amend criminal law proposes a 20 million won fine for flying the ”Rising Sun Flag” in South Korea
Residents of an apartment building in Busan, South Korea, have come under fire from the public for raising the Rising Sun flag on Memorial Day (a day to commemorate the martyrs and fallen soldiers of the Republic of Korea), and have called it a "symbol of militarism."
The bills, which were introduced by Rep. Moon Geum-ju of the Democratic Party on the 2nd, include the bill to amend the Criminal Code to punish the use of objects such as the Rising Sun Flag, and the bill to amend the Outdoor Advertising Act.
Anyone who creates or distributes symbols of militarism, or uses them in public or in a residential area where they can be seen by others, will be fined up to 20 million won (approximately 2.33 million yen).
The bill also includes provisions prohibiting advertisements in the Outdoor Advertising Act that include content that symbolizes militarism, and provides the mayor of a local government with legal authority to order the removal of the Rising Sun Flag or remove it.
The evidence was also in order. Rep. Moon said, "The act of displaying symbols of militarism, such as the Rising Sun Flag, tramples on the historical legitimacy of the Republic of Korea and desecrates our dignity, and is unforgivable."
"It is an unacceptable crime," he said. "Under all circumstances, we must strongly prevent such symbols from ever making an appearance in our society again."
