Presidential office says it wants to be allowed to investigate Democratic Party's impeachment of prosecutors - South Korea
On the 2nd, the Presidential Office said in response to the Democratic Party's proposal to impeach the prosecutors who led the investigation into Chairman Lee Jae-myung, "In the end, we want the investigation to be carried out in the way we want it to be.
"Our intention is still to give the Democratic Party of Korea investigative power," a presidential office official told reporters at Seoul's Yongsan Complex on the same day.
The official also commented on the same day about the resignation of former Korea Communications Chairman Kim Hong-il before the impeachment bill was presented to the plenary session, "What illegal acts are being used to impeach the Korea Communications Chairman?
"I am concerned about the Democratic Party's excessive impeachment motions, which continue to create a vacuum in national politics," he added.
According to the source, President Yoon Seok-yeol said he was closely monitoring the situation regarding the approval of Kim's resignation.
Regarding the fact that more than 900,000 people had petitioned for impeachment against President Yoon as of that day, he said, "There is no clear illegality involved.
"Unless that's the case, I don't think impeachment is possible," he said, but added, "It seems we've reached a situation where the continued mention of impeachment politically means national politics can no longer proceed smoothly."
The Democratic Party of Korea has stated that it intends to process the petition for public consent for impeachment through the Legislation and Judiciary Committee according to relevant laws.
In his final remarks at the Cabinet meeting, President Yoon responded to questions from the government by saying, "Through dialogue, the Prime Minister and other Cabinet members will continue to pursue a global, proactive approach to diplomacy, which is the tone of the government's national policy."
"I want the government to provide a detailed explanation to the public and the National Assembly on the government's foreign policy, private-sector-led free market economy, and welfare for the socially vulnerable," he said.
Presidential Chief of Staff Spokesperson Kim Soo-kyung said on the same day that he once again emphasized that his main focus is on the people's livelihood.
