”Should a key figure in the anti-nuclear movement be appointed as the Nuclear Safety Commissioner?” Korea Atomic Energy Society opposes, citing lack of expertise
Regarding reports that the Democratic Party of Korea, the largest opposition party in South Korea, is considering former lawmaker Yang Yi Won-young, who advocates the phase-out of nuclear power, as a non-permanent member of the Nuclear Safety Commission, the Korea Atomic Energy Agency (KAATO)
The society expressed strong opposition to the proposal, citing a lack of expertise and that the proposal is counter to the purpose of nuclear safety regulations, which are to protect public health and the environment, the group said in a statement on the 4th.
The society said, "Nuclear safety regulations are intended to protect the public and the environment from potential risks associated with the use of nuclear power. On the other hand, the anti-nuclear movement is aimed at stopping the use of nuclear power.
Therefore, the fundamental premise is different," he said, adding, "Having people who promote the phase-out of nuclear power involved in regulations does not conform to the purpose of safety regulations."
He added, "The Nuclear Safety Commission should be appointed from among those with deep knowledge and experience in nuclear safety.
"It is difficult to imagine that he has the expertise to do so," the society said. "The appointment of individuals with political leanings, individuals who lack independence, and individuals who lack expertise as committee members is unacceptable."
"The problems that anti-nuclear activists have caused in the past while serving as Nuclear Safety Commissioners have become clear through the committee's records," he said.
"The Nuclear Safety Commission has been forced to reject people who are opposed to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, who lack independence, who have political bias, or who lack specialized knowledge," he said.
I am opposed to recommending him as a member."
