Former Chairman Cho posted on his social media account that afternoon, "We who lived through those difficult times together are grateful for the sacrifices of many people, including Martyr Lee Han-yeol.
He continued, "Democracy is facing a serious crisis under the prosecutorial dictatorship. The way to repay the debt to Ri Han-yeol is to go beyond mourning him and save democracy in this crisis.
"It is our duty to protect the democracy that was built with the blood, sweat and tears of many people," he added. "I would like to express my condolences to the surviving families of those who contributed to our democracy. I hope that we will remember them forever with the people."
I will think carefully about what needs to be done in the National Assembly, including the Democracy Merit Act,” he said. Cho is the only candidate to be registered as party leader at the party convention scheduled for the 20th.
The day before, Cho held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center and said, "I am here again to pave the way for the Fatherland Reform Party to go beyond being a small, powerful party that has succeeded in gaining entry into the National Assembly and become a true mass party."
Cho has made clear his intention to run for re-election as party leader. Prior to this, Cho was elected as party leader at the party conference in March and took the helm of the party.
The party only put up candidates in the first round, receiving 6.87 million votes (24.25% of the vote) and securing 12 seats.
