A spokesman for the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on the same day, "Our government has made it clear from historical, geographical and international legal standpoints through the defense white paper released by the Japanese government on the 12th.
"We strongly protest against the Japanese government's repeated unjust claims to Liancourt Rocks, which are the inherent territory of the Republic of Korea," the spokesman said.
"We will make it clear that any provocations by Japan regarding Liancourt Rocks will not have any effect on our sovereignty and that we will respond firmly to any provocations by Japan regarding Liancourt Rocks."
It continued, "The Japanese government must clearly realize that repeating its unjust claims regarding Liancourt Rocks will not contribute to the building of a future-oriented Korea-Japan relationship.
The Japanese government adopted the 2024 Defense White Paper at a cabinet meeting on the same day. The white paper states, regarding the security environment in the Indo-Pacific region, "We will continue to take measures to protect our territorial integrity, including the Northern Territories, which are our inherent territory, and the Pacific Ocean."
"The territorial issue of Takeshima remains unresolved." Japan has continued to make this assertion regarding Takeshima in its defense white papers since 2005.
