The number of people registered as residents in South Korea over the age of 65 has exceeded 10 million. This has led to the view that the country has entered into a "super-aging society," with the proportion of the elderly population over 65 exceeding 20%.
On the 11th, the Ministry of Interior and Safety announced, "As of the 10th of this month, the number of registered residents aged 65 and over was 10,006,200, accounting for 19.51% of the total registered population of 51,269,012.
The number of registered residents aged 65 and over was 6,008,757 (11.97%) in January 2013, 7,031,367 (13.60%) in January 2017, and 8,008,757 (11.97%) in January 2018.
The percentage has been gradually increasing, from 8,026,915 people (15.48%) in December 2019 to 9,004,388 people (17.45%) in April 2022.
