韓国外相「WFPへの財源を“4倍以上”増額」…「コメの援助規模は2倍」
South Korean Foreign Minister: ”We will increase WFP funding by more than four times”... ”We will double the scale of rice aid”
On the 31st, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol met with Cindy McKeen, Executive Director of the United Nations Food Programme (WFP), who was visiting South Korea, to say, "We are the world's largest humanitarian aid organisation and an important partner of cooperation.
"We will continue to strengthen cooperation with the WFP," he said. According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a meeting with Executive Director Ma Kei Ing on the morning of the same day, Foreign Minister Cho said, "This year, the government will allocate regular financial resources to the WFP.
"We have more than quadrupled the amount of aid from the previous fiscal year to $2 million (approximately 300 million yen), and doubled the amount of rice aid to 100,000 tons," he said.
"We plan to consider providing further assistance," he said. Cho also said the South Korean government will reduce its ODA budget this year to 100,000, in order to fulfill its role in line with its vision of becoming a "global central nation."
WFP also explained that it has increased its budget by 40 percent and significantly increased its humanitarian aid budget. Executive Director McKeihin expressed his gratitude to South Korea for significantly increasing its support for WFP this year, saying, "60 years ago,
"We are using South Korea's growth from a recipient of WFP support to a major contributor as a perfect success story," said McKeen.
He highly praised the leadership he has demonstrated in resolving these issues.
