24 sites including ”Sado Mine,” site of Korean forced labor, newly registered as World Heritage sites - South Korean report
A total of 24 sites have been newly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the Sado Mine, a site of forced labor for Koreans during the Japanese colonial period.
According to the Korea National Heritage Administration on the 1st, the 46th Korean Cultural Heritage Festival was held in New Delhi, India from the 21st to the 31st of last month.
The World Heritage Committee added 24 new World Heritage sites, including 19 cultural sites, four natural sites, and one mixed site. This brings the total number of UNESCO World Heritage sites to 1,223 in 168 countries (952 cultural sites).
The number of newly added sites in the Asia-Pacific region was 231, 231 natural heritage sites, and 40 mixed heritage sites. In the Asia-Pacific region, seven new sites were added, including Moidam: Tombs of the Ahom Dynasty in India, the chair country, and Sado Mine in Japan.
The Sado mine is the site where approximately 1,500 Koreans were forced to work. The South Korean government has opposed the Sado mine being registered as a World Heritage Site until now, but the Japanese government said it would be "a step to reflect the entire history of the area."
The government accepted the request of the UNESCO World Heritage Advisory Body that "the site must be registered," promised to set up related exhibits and hold a memorial service, and agreed to the registration decision.
