Plane crashes in residential area in Brazil, killing all 62 on board
A mid-sized passenger plane carrying 62 people crashed near the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil on the 9th (local time), killing all on board.
According to Reuters, the plane left Cascavel, Parana state, that afternoon and headed for Guarulho, Sao Paulo state.
The ATR-72, en route to Llos Airport, flew near a highway in the city of Vinhedo in Sao Paulo state before crashing into a residential area. Authorities in the nearby city of Balinghose said there were no survivors.
"Only one house in a local condominium complex was damaged, and no residents were injured," the company said. The plane, which can carry up to 68 people, was carrying 58 passengers and a crew member.
The airline said four people were on board. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was at an event in the southern city of Santa Catarina when he heard the news and tweeted: "We have received tragic reports."
It was reported that he said, "Thank you for your hard work," and observed a moment of silence with the other participants.
