In order to create a safe environment for the use of personal mobility vehicles, mobility rental companies have signed a business agreement to strengthen safety management of personal mobility vehicles.
Accordingly, until the end of next month, a concentrated crackdown will be conducted on violations of personal mobility safety regulations, including drunk driving.
Driving without a license carries a fine of 100,000 won (US$110), two or more people on board are fined 40,000 won (US$44), and not wearing a safety helmet is fined 20,000 won (US$22).
During the two-week trial period that began on the 15th of last month, a total of 9,445 violations of safety regulations were uncovered. Of these, the most common was not wearing a safety helmet (73.4%) and driving without a license.
This was followed by driving while standing on the road (18.9%) and drunk driving (2.9%). In addition, a personal mobility rental company is conducting a test to lower the speed limit for electric scooters from 25km per hour to 20km per hour.
The South Korean government plans to analyze the results of the test run until the end of December this year, verify the effectiveness of the speed reduction, and consider amending the law if necessary.
Kim Young-gyun, director of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's safety prevention policy office, said, "The government will continue to supplement areas that require system improvement."
We ask users to be fully aware of and comply with the safety rules for personal mobility devices such as electric scooters."
