For the first time in a long while, political circles from both the ruling and opposition parties in South Korea gave generous congratulations to Kyoto International High School, a school of Korean descent in Japan, for winning the Summer Koshien.
On the 23rd, Yoon Sang Hyun, a member of the People's Power Party, posted on his SNS, "At a Korean ethnic school in Japan,
"Kyoto International High School, which is a major player in the world, won the Koshien high school baseball finals, known as the pinnacle of high school sports," he said, adding, "I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations on this amazing achievement, their first victory since the baseball club was founded in 1999."
He continued, "Unlike other high schools, we are really happy that we have both Japanese and Korean supporters," and "We want to play in a way that will give courage to the Korean people."
"The comments of the team's captain, Haruki Fujimoto, also resonate with us," he said, "Today's victory by Kyoto International High School at Koshien marks a new beginning for Japan-Korea relations, with young people wrapped up in a party that is burning with passion for their dreams and the future."
Ahn Cheol-soo, a lawmaker from the same party, also wrote on his social media account, "I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to the Korean-American Kyoto International High School for winning the summer Koshien tournament."
"My heart warms when the Korean school song rings out in celebration of the victory at the sacred grounds of Japanese high school baseball," he wrote. He continued, "Just standing at Koshien Stadium is a dream, but achieving the victory is truly amazing.
"I would like to offer my warmest applause to all our overseas Koreans and those involved in overseas educational institutions who are working to provide ethnic education overseas, including Kyoto International High School," he added.
The ruling party also applauded the school's victory. Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Park Ji-won posted on social media, "It brings tears to my eyes to see Kyoto International High School win the Koshien Baseball Tournament! The Korean school song is being heard all over Japan."
"The sound of the bell rings out in the air," he said, encouraging the crowd, "I congratulate you with tears in my eyes." Cho Kuk, the leader of the Reform Party, also said at a meeting of the party's Supreme Committee that day, "There hasn't been much good news lately.
"However, I have some good news. Kyoto International High School, a Korean school in Japan, has advanced to the finals," he said, adding, "I hope that Kyoto International High School will win the Koshien finals."
After the victory, he posted on his social media, "I'm going to be playing against Kyoto International High School, the winner of the Koshien, and the 'Strongest Baseball' (a Korean baseball game in which high school students compete against retired professional baseball players) led by coach Kim Seong-keun.
This summer, Kyoto International High School lost the finals of the 106th National High School Baseball Championship to Kanto Daiichi High School, representing East Tokyo, 2-1 after extra innings.
