Woman victim of domestic violence sets fire to house and kills boyfriend... heavy sentence given to South Korea

A woman in her 40s who suffered from domestic violence from her boyfriend in Jeonju was given a heavy sentence for setting fire to a house and killing her boyfriend.
According to the Korean legal profession on the 2nd, the Jeonju District Court Gunsan branch is accused of setting fire to an occupied building.
Defendant A (42), who was arrested and indicted on charges of murder, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Defendant A set fire to a detached house in Gunsan City, Jeollabuk-do (North Jeolla Province) at around 3 a.m. on May 11 this year.
Defendant A was indicted on charges of murdering his girlfriend, Ms. B, while drinking together. Defendant A was assaulted by Ms. B, and so he held a grudge against her and committed the crime while Ms. B was asleep, drunk.
The defendant watched the fire spread but did not report it. The police arrested Defendant A, who was sitting near a house in a drunken state, on the spot.
In response to a question from investigators asking whether he had agreed to the crime, Defendant A replied, "I did it because I was afraid the fire would go out."
"If the fire had gone out, I might have killed her." Police investigations revealed that defendant A had suffered repeated violence from B, with whom he had been in a relationship for five years since 2019.
On the day of the crime, he was also punched in the face by B. The court ruled that "human life and dignity are absolute and cannot be disposed of without reason.
"An act that violates this right cannot be tolerated," the court said, adding, "The defendant set fire to the house despite knowing that the victim was drunk and asleep, and his crime is extremely serious."
He also said, "The defendant's crime took the victim's precious life, and her family suffered serious and lifelong wounds that are difficult to heal."
Considering that he made no effort to seek forgiveness from the bereaved family, severe punishment is unavoidable," he said in explaining the sentence.
