The President's Office had previously stated that, "If the medical community presents a reasonable proposal, we will start the discussion from scratch on the issue of medical school enrollment."
This means that they will accept the proposal by Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, to form a "ruling and opposition party parliamentary consultative body" and will start the discussion on medical school admissions quotas for the 2026 academic year from scratch.
However, the Korean Medical Association has said that in order for the medical community to participate in the "ruling and opposition party parliamentary consultative body," it must scrap its plans to increase the number of medical school staff in 2025 and 2026 and set aside 100 staff by 2027.
A Korean Medical Association official said, "If it is appropriate to increase the number of students in medical schools, we should start discussing the increase from 2027 or later.
