Han Dong-hoon, representative of People's Power, says, ”Deferment of increase in medical school enrollment quota for 2025, replacement of Minister and Vice Minister of Health and Welfare? ... Discussion is possible” (Korea)
Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People's Power Party, announced on the 10th that the medical community had set a condition for the ruling and opposition parties to participate in the government consultation body: a postponement of the 2025 medical school admissions quota increase, and the Minister and Vice Minister of Health and Welfare
Regarding the 'resignation of the medical community,' he said, "If the medical community sits at the table, can't we get together and discuss anything? We can." Representative Han met with reporters at the National Assembly that afternoon and said, "I will mediate."
"We are not going to put this at the forefront of our position and say that this is something that has to be done. I think the public will be very worried," he said. Han said, "I hope that a political consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties will be established soon and that they will hold dialogue."
"If we show them the results and the medical community speaks up, won't that mean we can make it a majority decision (in the consultation body)? Isn't it necessary to start talking about it?"
This was just before Kim Sang-hoon, chairman of the People's Power Policy Committee, said at a press conference, "The 2025 medical school enrollment quota
This is interpreted as a more open stance than his previous remarks that "the postponement of personnel increases and the replacement of the Minister and Vice Minister of Health and Welfare are not conditions for the establishment of a political consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties."
Han said, "It is precisely because we have different positions that we are meeting and talking. There is nothing we cannot do as a condition for the establishment of a parliamentary consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties.
"It should not be," he said. "For various reasons, I proposed a postponement of the increase in the number of medical school admissions in 2026, and this idea may have been there. However, he was stubborn about his idea and said it was absolutely wrong.
"First of all, I think it is very important that the four parties hold a meeting and start talking," he said. Regarding the lack of a positive attitude from the medical community, Han said, "
The medical community has been fully involved and is able to say what they want to say. So let's have a thorough discussion. There are probably various opinions in the medical community, but I think it would be good to participate and have a dialogue.
I respectfully ask that they give it a try."
