「生まれて初めて見た」…ベテラン船長も驚いたトンボの大群=韓国
”I've never seen anything like this in my life” - Even a veteran captain was surprised by the swarm of dragonflies (Korea)
Fishermen and tourists have complained of swarms of dragonflies appearing in the sea off Jeju. Rising temperatures are likely to be the cause, but the exact cause is unknown.
On the 10th, JIBS (Jeju Broadcasting System) reported that a swarm of dragonflies had recently appeared off the coast of Gimnyeong, Cheju Island. According to the video released by the media, a swarm of dragonflies was spotted 3 kilometers offshore on the early morning of the 8th of this month.
A swarm of more than several thousand dragonflies swarmed onto a fishing boat that was out fishing in the ocean with its fishing lights on. Not only did the dragonflies attach themselves to the fishermen's bodies, but they also filled the boat, making it impossible for them to continue fishing.
The captain of the fishing boat said, "There are more dragonflies on windless days," and "I've never seen so many dragonflies before. They really come in by the thousands, tens of thousands."
This dragonfly was identified as a subtropical damselfly. The damselfly prefers temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius and lives in mid-latitudes and tropical regions of the Southern Hemisphere. It is a light-bodied species specialized for long-distance flight.
When they sense a change in tropical air currents, such as a typhoon, they can ride the strong sea breeze and fly for several kilometers. Some speculate that an unusually hot summer is the cause.
Dragonflies usually fly north in autumn, but due to the recent unusually high temperatures, they are believed to be remaining on Cheju Island even now in September.
Although the damselfly is not a pest, the continued hot and humid weather that favors its activity means that the population is likely to continue to increase.
It was reported to be highly sexual.
