Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo: ”This is further inciting confusion” in response to People Power lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo's statement that the 2025 medical school admission quota increase will be scrapped (South Korea)
On the 12th, Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo announced that Ahn Cheol-soo, a ruling party lawmaker, had offered a one-year grace period for the increase in medical school admissions quotas for 2025 in response to the medical gap.
Mayor Hong criticized Ahn Cheol-soo, who is also a doctor, for coming out now and stirring up further confusion.
"Rep. Soo's solution to the medical chaos is to neutralize the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's medical reform policies and side with doctors, but it is not a solution to the medical chaos," he said.
Prior to this, Rep. Ahn held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center in Yeouido, Seoul, that morning and said, "If medical students and medical residents do not return, the medical system will collapse.
"If we don't discuss the 2025 (medical school) enrollment quota, they have no intention of returning. I urge President Yoon Seok-yeol to make a decision."
Mayor Hong responded, "70% of the public and even some opposition party leaders are in favor of increasing the number of medical school students, so why are they being put on hold now?
What are you talking about? We had hoped that he would step in and mediate in the early stages of the medical chaos, but he has only stepped in now and is only stirring up more confusion."
He added, "I would be truly grateful if (Rep. Ahn) could leave his post in a more thoughtful manner and contribute to the establishment of national policies as a politician."
