”What's going on?” Foreigners who saw the torrential rain on Ulleungdo first grabbed shovels - Korean media
As record-breaking rains fell on Ulleung Island in North Gyeongsang Province for the first time in 46 years, an American YouTuber who was visiting the island for a trip went directly to the disaster site.
He was reported to have been involved in the restoration efforts. A video titled "Shocked by the State of Ulleungdo" was posted on the YouTube channel "Nick K." The channel has 230,000 subscribers.
Nick, who has a child, is a YouTuber who cycles around the world and has recently been traveling in South Korea. Nick had originally planned to go to Takeshima, but he visited Ulleungdo first.
There, he witnessed a shocking scene. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Ulleungdo Island had received record-breaking rainfall of up to 300mm between the previous day and the day of the incident, causing extensive damage.
It was the first time since August 3, 1978 that more than 70 millimeters of rain fell per hour. When Nick got off at the wharf on Ulleung Island and saw the heavy downpour, he wondered, "What is going on?
"There's a landslide? The city is covered in mud, tree branches, and rocks," he said, sounding surprised. In fact, Nick's video showed that the city of Ulleungdo was covered in mud and rocks everywhere.
Residents were clearing away the rainwater and soil that had seeped into their homes and stores. Nick, who was watching this, said, "I may have to help with cleaning and restoration on the island for a few days."
"I'll leave my wallet and cell phone at the hotel and see what I can do," he said. After that, Nick picked up a shovel and helped with the recovery efforts together with firefighters and residents.
"We just made space for cars to pass through," said Ku, explaining, "After removing the mud from the middle of the road, we moved all the rocks on the side of the road, but more and more rocks just keep coming back."
Nick, who shared his thoughts on his first day on Ulleungdo, said, "I can't believe I'm going to encounter such a heavy rainfall," but added, "I just hope that everyone is safe.
"So far, no one has been injured, but as you can see in the video, people's homes and businesses have suffered severe damage," he said.
People who watched the video said, "Foreigners who want to let the world know about Takeshima and help with recovery from the floods."
"I can't believe there's a YouTuber like that. I wish him success," "He's a very grateful foreigner," "It must not be easy to help with the recovery effort. I'm grateful," "I hope things will return to normal soon," etc.
The reaction is shown.
