South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yol, who is visiting New York to attend the UN General Assembly, held a 30-minute meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa on the same day.
The foreign ministers' meeting was held in the run-up to the LDP presidential election on the 27th of this month and the U.S. presidential election in November, and so the main topics of discussion were the strengthening of cooperation between Japan, the U.S. and South Korea, the North Korean issue, and other pending regional issues.
The three foreign ministers praised the results of the agreement reached at the Camp David Summit in August last year, and emphasized the need to "institutionalize Japan-US-ROK cooperation."
The three foreign ministers agreed to "make active efforts to hold a Japan-U.S.-ROK summit meeting within the year and take this opportunity to make an announcement regarding the establishment of a Japan-U.S.-ROK Secretariat."
In their opening remarks at the meeting, the foreign ministers of the three countries also stated their "willingness to continue cooperating regardless of changes in political leadership."
