South Korean government to ”conduct thorough monitoring” regarding release of Fukushima nuclear power plant treated water into ocean
The South Korean government has decided to conduct thorough monitoring of Tokyo Electric Power Company's release of "treated water" from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean, which begins on the 26th of this month.
Kim Jong-moon, first vice director of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, made the remarks at a press conference at the Government Seoul Complex on the 25th.
Kim said, "As with previous responses, we will thoroughly monitor the release data and tritium concentrations in the sea areas near Fukushima in real time.
"We will do our utmost to protect the health and safety of the public, including by closely monitoring and inspecting the release situation through measures such as dispatching experts," he said.
"Even if some countries consider relaxing import restrictions on Japanese products, our government will not relax import restrictions on Japanese products," he said.
"We are not considering it," he said, and stressed that "we will continue to maintain our position that we will not compromise on the health and safety of the people."
