A woman in her 30s who, unable to contain her anger at her husband's demand for a divorce, poured glacial acetic acid on his sleeping husband and then attempted to kill him with a weapon was sentenced to five years in prison in the first trial.
On the 27th, the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced the defendant Shin (30), who was arrested and indicted on charges of attempted murder, to five years in prison.
The court said, "Taking into consideration the defendant's testimony and other factors, we find him guilty of all charges of attempted murder," and added, "The injuries suffered by the victim as a result of the incident were not minor, and the family is also suffering considerable mental distress.
The court also stated, "Even if the attempt was unsuccessful, the damage suffered by the victim is not small," and added, "Nevertheless, the defendant has shown deep remorse and is a victim."
"I took into consideration the way the two men had discussed the matter and the family's pleas," he said, explaining the reason for the sentence. Shin was arrested at an apartment in Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, at around 1 a.m. on March 19 this year.
She is accused of pouring glacial acetic acid on her drunken sleeping husband and then brandishing a weapon to try to kill him.
According to the prosecution, Shin prepared glacial acetic acid in advance to kill her husband, and on the day of the crime, she poured glacial acetic acid and boiling water on her sleeping husband's face.
When the husband woke up and ran away, the woman chased him with a weapon and threatened him. Prior to this, at a public hearing, Shin admitted to the charges through his lawyer, saying, "I have admitted to all the facts of the indictment and am remorseful."
