The Democratic Party of Korea issues a summons to a professor regarding allegations that Kim Jin-hee's wife ghostwrote a thesis... The People's Power protests, saying there is ”no legitimate reason” = South Korea
On the 8th, the National Assembly Education Committee announced that it had decided to appoint Kim Gun-Hee, who was selected as a witness for the National Assembly audit, to investigate allegations that Kim Gun-Hee, the wife of President Yoon Seok-Yeol, had written a thesis for another woman.
The ruling People Power Party lawmakers, along with opposition party lawmakers including the Democratic Party, said Professor Seol had submitted a letter of absence for health reasons.
Despite this, they protested, saying that there was "no legitimate reason" to go ahead with the vote to issue the escort order.
At a general meeting of the National Assembly's Education Committee, the issuance of a warrant for Professor Seol was put to a vote. Of the 16 members present, 10 opposition members voted in favor and 6 ruling party members voted against, so the bill was passed.
Before the vote, a heated debate ensued between the ruling and opposition party committee members over whether it was appropriate to issue an escort warrant to Professor Seol.
The professor submitted a letter of absence to the Board of Education citing health reasons, but opposition committee members pointed out that Professor Sol continues to teach at the university and argued that his absence was unjustified.
"Over the past three years, several witnesses have been selected to testify regarding Kim's thesis, which is a matter of great concern," said Moon Jeong-bok, a member of the Democratic Party and a member of the opposition party.
Despite repeated warnings, he went on a business trip abroad. This is an act of ignoring the National Assembly. The chairman has issued orders to the witnesses who did not attend the National Assembly audit out of courtesy, as well as to Professor Seol.
Rep. Baek Seung-ah said, "Professor Seol has avoided the parliamentary audit for two years without any clear reason. This is not the first time.
"The details of the incident are unknown, and there are also family circumstances. When we checked with the university, we found that he was steadily teaching four subjects in the first semester and four subjects in the second semester."
People Power lawmakers responded by accusing Democratic Party lawmakers of leaking personal information.
The lawmaker, People's Power, said, "I agree with the criticism of those who did not submit a statement of absence, but it is unreasonable to claim that a witness who has even attached a medical certificate is not in good health.
"It is morally inappropriate," he said. Rep. Cho repeatedly criticized the move, saying, "The name of a specific witness' illness was exposed to all media. This is a clear violation of the Personal Information Protection Act." He also said, "A specialist testified,
"I have proven that I am in such poor health that I cannot afford to undergo surgery, so do we have the right to bring me as a witness and violate my right to health?" he countered.
In response, Chairman Kim said, "It is difficult to agree with Professor Seol's explanation.
"In a situation where serious misconduct has been uncovered at the school, it is absolutely necessary to call him in and listen to what he has to say," he said, emphasizing the need to issue an escort order.
