”Selling and wearing police uniforms is punishable”... Police intensively crack down during Halloween week in South Korea
The Korean police will be cracking down on the sale and wearing of police uniforms and equipment (costumes) during Halloween week. According to the National Police Agency on the 28th, the police will be cracking down on the sale and wearing of police uniforms and equipment during Halloween week from the 25th to the 3rd of next month.
The government said it would step up online monitoring for two weeks before and after the launch to prevent the indiscriminate distribution and use of police-like uniforms and equipment.
The police will focus on cracking down on 54 major online retailers and second-hand trading sites, and will request investigations when illegal activities are uncovered.
Prior to this, the police had announced to the Korea Online Shopping Association (KOLSA) on the 21st that they would strengthen management of retailers during Halloween week and restrict searches for related terms such as police uniforms and police uniforms.
On the 25th, they also sent official documents to major second-hand trading sites, requesting their cooperation in cracking down on the issue.
Depending on the severity of the cases and the number of cases, the police will also investigate the operators of the trading sites for aiding and abetting them.
Additionally, city and provincial police agencies will coordinate crowd control efforts at major festival locations and begin providing on-site education and enforcement related to the wearing of police uniforms.
Under the Police Uniform Equipment Law, non-police personnel are prohibited from wearing police uniforms or clothing similar to police uniforms or using police equipment.
It is illegal to possess or sell these drugs. Violators are subject to imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to 3 million won (approximately 330,000 yen), while sellers are subject to imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of 10 million won (approximately 10,000 yen).
Through monitoring, the Police Equipment Distribution Center took corrective measures in a total of 54 cases last year and requested investigations into five cases. Of these, three were referred to the prosecutor's office.
This year too, corrective measures have been taken in one case, and investigations are underway in four of the five cases for which investigations were requested.
The police have confirmed that commemorative uniforms (bearing police symbols) distributed to students at the police school were posted on a second-hand trading site, and are currently investigating.
Police cosplayers may be mistaken for real police officers in the event of an accident.
During the 2022 Itaewon tragedy, many ordinary people dressed up as police officers, mistaking the actual police for ordinary people and not following the instructions, which led to the accident being difficult to contain.
There are indications that it is late.
