”World Environment Day” to be held in Jeju next year...First domestic event in 28 years
The Ministry of Environment of South Korea (equivalent to the Ministry of the Environment in Japan) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced at 4 pm on the 28th (Japan time) that Jeju will be the venue for the World Environment Day event to be held on June 5, 2025.
This marks the first time in 28 years that a Korean Olympic Games has been selected as a venue for the Olympics, following Seoul's bid for the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in 1997.
World Environment Day has been held annually on June 5th since 1972 by the United Nations Environment Programme and the host country to pledge the international community's interest and efforts in environmental conservation.
The 2025 World Environment Day event will be held at the United Nations Plastics Conference in Busan from November 25 to December 1 this year.
In conjunction with the fifth intergovernmental negotiation on the Convention, this is expected to be an opportunity to inform the world of the importance of ending plastic pollution.
Jeju Island has declared the "2040 Plastic-Free Jeju Vision" in 2022.
The city is leading policy efforts to end plastic pollution, such as introducing a deposit system for disposable cups for the first time in the country, and is considered the best venue to embody the meaning of World Environment Day.
Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, said, "Jeju's efforts towards a plastic pollution-free future align with the goals of World Environment Day 2025."
"Jeju Island's blessed natural scenery and innovative environmental policies will serve as an inspiration to encourage environmental protection practices," he said.
Minister of Environment Kim Wan-seop said, "The 2025 World Environment Day event will bring together global efforts to end plastic pollution.
"This will be a starting point for putting an end to plastic pollution," he said, emphasizing, "We hope to successfully host the event together with Jeju Province so that we can position ourselves as a leader in putting an end to plastic pollution."
