Czech competition authority rejects EDF-Westinghouse challenge to South Korea nuclear contract
The Czech Republic's antitrust authorities have ruled that the government and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), which operates the nuclear plant, will not accept French and American competitors for the new construction contract at the Dukovany nuclear power plant.
The Czech Republic rejected the company's objection on October 31 (local time), which is expected to add momentum to negotiations between KHNP and Czech Electric Power Co. (CEZ), which aims to conclude the final contract in March of next year.
According to AFP, the Czech antitrust office (UOHS) announced on the same day that it had rejected challenges from Electricite de France (EDF) and the United States' Westinghouse.
The previous day, UOHS announced that it had accepted the protests from both companies and had temporarily suspended the nuclear power contract with KHNP. This raised concerns about the contract in South Korea, leading to a stock market crash on the 31st.
The market reflected this, with nuclear power-related stocks falling sharply. Both companies have the right to appeal the decision, and if they do, the contract with KHNP will be put on hold until the final result is reached.
