Exclusive stream of "Gangnam B-Side" has started. (Total 8 episodes / 2 episodes streamed every Wednesday) "Gangnam B-Side" is about a detective and a prosecutor searching for the "club ace" who disappeared in Gangnam, and the
A mysterious man with a mysterious aura pursues a case hidden in the darkness of Gangnam in the non-stop suspense drama PENG SOO. Prior to the stream, the show will be held on Wednesday, October 30th at the Gwanghwamun Four Seasons Hotel, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
An online press conference was held at, with actors Jo Woo-Jin, Ha Yoon-Kyung, Kim Hyun-Seo (BIBI), Ji Chang Wook and director Park Noo-Ri in attendance.
Q. First, please say hello to everyone. Jo Woo Jin: It's been a while since I've been to a press conference like this, so I can't contain my excitement.
I'm very happy and nervous right now. I'll do my best to make the time worthwhile. Ha Yoon Kyung: Thank you for joining us this morning.
I worked hard and had fun making this, so I hope everyone will enjoy it. Kim Hyun Seo: I've been busy filming TV series recently, so I haven't had many opportunities to appear in public like this.
But I hope I can answer your questions carefully. Thank you. Ji Chang Wook: I'm glad that so many of you are here. I hope we can have a meaningful and enjoyable time today.
I hope to spend the time with you. Thank you. Director Park Nuri: I'm nervous and excited to be able to show this film that I worked so hard on to people all over the world.
I hope we can have a meaningful discussion today. Q. I would like to ask each of you how the four characters come together around a mysterious incident and how they become intertwined. First of all,
What kind of character is the detective Kang Dong-woo that you played? Jo Woo-Jin: He is a man with a strong sense of justice. A demoted detective returns to Gangnam after a disappearance case occurs.
The character struggles to solve the case. After consulting with the director, I wanted to portray an adult who I hope exists in real life.
Q. It seems like you put a lot of effort into preparing for your role. How did you prepare for the role?
Jo Woo-Jin: I tried to get close to the image of a familiar "modern uncle." Also, I wanted to have a heavy, solid image.
Because my coach told me to, I gained weight to the highest level since my third year of high school and bulked up. I hope you will see a side of me you've never seen before.
Q. Next up is Ji Chang Wook. He plays an intriguing character, a broker who volunteers to be a suspect. Can you introduce him to us?
Ji Chang Wook: A notorious broker in the underworld of Gangnam. He is a man who has lived a desperate life and, in his quest to find JaeHee (played by Kim Hyun Seo),
After meeting Detective Ng Dong-woo, the character becomes more and more involved in the case and changes. Q. I was surprised when I was watching the heartwarming movie. That gaze, which seems sad, is
It looked cute and I had never seen it before... Ji Chang Wook: I think that was all thanks to the makeup artist, lighting technician, and filming team (laughs).
Q. Did you also pay attention to the styling? Ji Chang Wook: To portray a character who is in the underground, everything from makeup to clothes
So I made various efforts. I made it so that Yoon Gil-ho (played by Ji Chang-Wook) always has a scar on his face so that you can see what kind of life he is living and who he is fighting against.
I chose a costume that was tighter than the clothes I usually wear so that I could express a sense of danger and suspiciousness that is different from that of ordinary people. Q. What kind of role is the prosecutor Min So Jin, played by Ha Yoon Kyung?
Ha Yoon Kyung: He is an ordinary prosecutor without any backing. He has ambitions to get promoted and succeed, but he also has strong beliefs as a prosecutor.
Q. Ha Yoon Kyung is a doctor and lawyer in the previous film, and a prosecutor in this one. I think you could say he is an actor with many different professions. What were your thoughts and feelings in playing the role of a prosecutor?
Ha Yoon Kyung: Yes, I actually met the prosecutor directly, asked him detailed questions about what kind of work he usually does, and gave him advice on his style.
For the ring, I also took inspiration from the idea of wearing clothes with inconspicuous colors. Q. When I watched the Heart movie, it seemed like you were very careful about your pronunciation.
Ha Yoon Kyung: The character Min (So Jin) is not a character who talks a lot, but when she does speak, she uses difficult words and talks at length.
So I spoke while savoring each and every line. Q. Kim Hyun Seo, who played the mysterious woman Jae Hee, please introduce your character.
Kim Hyun Seo: He is a mysterious character whose past and future are unknown. He seems anxious... (MC: "Hyung right now"
"Seo-san seems worried," I said. I've given away spoilers in places like this before, so I'm being careful. (laughs) He's the one who started all of this, and he committed a crime.
Q. Without giving away any spoilers, what are the highlights of the mysterious woman JaeHee?
Kim Hyun Seo: While acting as this character, I imagined a small mouse.
I think he's a perfect example of the proverb that even if you're low on the food chain, you can still rebel when faced with danger.
Q. Director, how about the actors who gave performances that perfectly suited their unique characters?
Director Park Nuri: They were all wonderful and charming actors, and I was very happy. I also worked with Jo Woo Jin in the previous film, "The Money Diggers."
I have worked closely with Ha Yoon Kyung and have found him trustworthy both as an actor and as a person, so when I offered him the role of Kang Dong Woo, I had no hesitation in asking him.
I was a big fan of his and he has appeared in art cinema and low-budget films, so I thought he had a wide range of acting. His ability to show a vacant expression behind his pure gaze made him perfect for this role.
I thought so. Kim Hyun-seo was the first of the four to be cast. I was impressed when I saw her singing on an audition program a long time ago. I hope we can sing together someday.
I had always wanted to work with Hyunseo, and when I was in the early stages of writing the script, I met her and thought she was a perfect fit, so I wrote the script with Hyunseo in mind.
Finally, my mother has always been a big fan of Ji Chang Wook, and I have always wanted to work with him while watching his TV series with my mother.
I wanted to see the villain side of things, so I thought this role would suit me, and offered it to me. Q. When did you tell your mother that Ji Chang Wook had been cast?
Director Park Nuri: They looked very happy. After filming was over, they bombarded me with questions about every little detail.
Q. This is a suggestion that wasn't on the table, but Ji Chang Wook and Park Nuri
Please say something to the director's mother. Ji Chang Wook: The director's mother is actually a senior actor and played my mother in the film "The Worst Evil". It's an interesting connection.
The director's younger brother also appears in the film, so it really feels like a family relationship. Q. "Gangnam B-Side" is a film that depicts the other side of Gangnam, but why did it have to be Gangnam?
Director Park Nuri: I thought that Gangnam was a place that was the base of life, an object of admiration and jealousy for some, and a symbol of glamour.
I thought it would be interesting to write an interesting story about the existence of darkness that underpins the glamour and the kind of life that exists behind it.
Q. I imagine you had some difficulties in depicting the real city of Gangnam. How did you go about doing that?
Director Park Noori: I thought it was important to pursue realism, so I tried to shoot in Gangnam as much as possible. I want the viewers to feel like, "Oh, I know this place."
I thought that if Tokoro was included, the story would have become more realistic. I thought that if the people involved in Gangnam were portrayed realistically, the story would have a more realistic feel.
Q. Looking at the TV series from a keyword perspective, I think that "action" is an essential element of this TV series.
Jo Woo-Jin: The action scenes of Yoon Gil-ho, played by Ji Chang-Wook, were flashy and vivid, whereas the action scenes of me, played by him, were very dramatic.
In order to portray such a character, I made him look heavy and sturdy, but I also thought that basic skills were important, so I sharpened them.
Q. Ji Chang Wook's action was so perfect that even the director said it was perfect. What aspects did you focus on?
Ji Chang Wook: I did my best with the action scenes on set under the direction of the action director. Before filming, I had a clear idea of how the character would fight and why he would fight.
I focused on the space and the weapons they would use to fight. Q. Ha Yoon Kyung, you said that you would rather do "straightforward oral action" and "sexual action" than physical action.
Ha Yoon Kyung: People can express emotion by talking a lot, but Min So Jin is good at expressing emotion.
Q. Kim Hyun Seo, wearing a red mini dress, sprinting through the middle of Gangnam in an "athletics action" scene left an impression.
Do you have any stories from the filming? Kim Hyun Seo: I ran in high heels, so I had to be careful not to hurt my spine or pelvis. It was also cold. But,
Running makes you feel hot and warm. I ran for about 10 hours, so I was happy to have lost some weight when I got home.
Q. What did you think as the director, watching everyone's action up close?
Director Park Nuri: Everyone was analyzing the characters and preparing for their roles more than I was, so I was able to see a lot of scenes that I hadn't expected.
There was also chemistry between the characters, with their expressions changing depending on who they were facing. I think the viewers will also be able to enjoy that kind of thing.
Q. From here on, I would like you to answer questions from the reporters. Recently, TV series in the crime genre have become popular, but what are some of the unique differences between this series and others?
Director Park Nuri: I was very concerned about the speed of the story. I made it so that you couldn't stop the story in the middle, even if you had to pause it to go to the bathroom. From EP1 to EP8
The relationship between the characters changes, and the unpredictable developments such as the change between good and evil are a highlight of the film. Q. Ji Chang Wook, you starred in the film "Revolver" released this summer.
Ji Chang Wook: When I first read the script, I was drawn to the dark side of Yoon Gil-ho, a man who lives in the underworld.
I wanted to play a character that could play a role that was different from the characters I played before, so I paid close attention to the details, such as the appropriate costume, makeup, and hairstyle.
There's a limit to what I can express through my acting alone, so I think I was able to do it with the help of the filming staff and everyone else involved.
Q. Ha Yoon Kyung was introduced as a character who is obsessed with success. What are your thoughts after watching the first two episodes of the TV series?
You seem to be a very honest character. I imagine you had to suppress your emotions while acting. Was there anything difficult about that?
Ha Yoon Kyung: As you said, I want them to look like normal people in the beginning.
At first, Min So Jin seems like an ordinary prosecutor, but as the story progresses, the choices he makes become clear.
I want you to pay attention to the part about what he will do. I think he is the most confused and complex character internally. However, he is a character who must not show that on the surface, so this character
I hope you will be curious to see what kind of person he is. Q. Jo Woo Jin, this is your first lead role in a TV series in a long time. How are you feeling now? Also, how did you gain 18kg?
I'm sure it was difficult, so please tell us some stories. Jo Woo-Jin: I'm overwhelmed. I'm so grateful to have been able to participate in this production and to be able to explain my role at a press conference like this.
I feel very lucky to have been given this opportunity. I am always grateful. I have vowed to myself that I must do my best on set. I feel that I have been able to grow one step further through this work.
I think it's great that I've gained weight, and I hope that viewers can understand that. When I was in high school, I didn't exercise and just sat at a desk and I got fat up to 90kg, but this time
I ate a lot and exercised a lot to gain weight. It was hard to get used to seeing myself on the monitor. I wanted to make sure that the character I played was a familiar and supportive character for the viewers.
I want people to think that I am a capable person. Q. Ha Yoon Kyung, was there anything difficult about playing the role of a prosecutor? What new side of yourself did you want to show in this work?
Ha Yoon Kyung: It wasn't difficult because I was a prosecutor, but it was very difficult to suppress my emotions. How could I not lose my presence and express my emotions through my gaze?
Q. This is your second time acting together with Ji Chang Wook and Kim Hyun Seo since "The Worst Evil". How was it?
Ji Chang Wook: In "The Worst Evil," Hyunseo's interpretation of the character was very fresh and interesting. Hyunseo's acting was also an inspiration to me.
Regarding that, I thought Hyunseo's interpretation of the role of JaeHee was very interesting, and I thought it would be fun to work with her.
Kim Hyun Seo: I always learn from Ji Chang Wook. I really like his acting, which is very controlling.
I was a bit introverted and nervous and timid in "The Worst Evil," but in this film we had good chemistry and it was fun from the beginning.
Q. Jo Woo Jin and Ji Chang Wook also appeared in the film "Hard Hit."
This is their first collaboration since "Call Restrictions."
In "Call Restriction," he grabbed Ji Chang Wook by the collar.
What about this time? Jo Woo-Jin: Yes, I grabbed him by the collar again this time (laughs). Q. You have worked on a drama in which the protagonist approaches the truth behind the police's collusion with drugs and clubs.
Director Park Nuri: The subject matter is the same as your previous works, so it may feel a bit like déjà vu, but this time it's a crime.
Rather than exposing and investigating, this is a story about a person trying to protect what is most important to him, so I would like viewers to pay more attention to the emotions of the characters.
Q. This is Jo Woo Jin's first lead role since "Hard Hit." Did you feel any pressure?
Jo Woo Jin: To be honest, I wasn't really aware of it. I don't think it's a given. I've always kept my original intentions and done well.
I ran hard, thinking that my goal was to do my best for the film and for the good scenes. I turned that energy into mental strength and ran as hard as I could, following the director's instructions.
Q. Finally, please give a message to the viewers. Jo Woo-Jin: It seems that the weather will suddenly get colder from next week. Even so, I hope that this drama will warm everyone's hearts and be full of passionate performances.
I think you will enjoy the show. The characters will perform brilliantly, so please support them. Ha Yoon Kyung: I also watched the first half of the TV series and found it very interesting.
I am participating in today's press conference with a feeling of joy. I think everyone will enjoy the film, so I hope you will all watch it.
Kim Hyun-seo: I would like to introduce my work through the media members who have kindly come to visit us today.
Thank you for doing so. I hope all the reporters will watch the TV series until the end. Thank you.
Ji Chang Wook: I'm glad we were able to talk a lot about "Gangnam B-Side."
It was a pleasure to be here. There are many more things I would like to talk about, so I am sad to leave. It will be streamed on November 6th, so please tune in. I would be happy if there is another opportunity to talk about the work.
Director Park Nuri: Thank you for giving me this opportunity today. I answered your questions carefully and sincerely, and I hope that my feelings were conveyed and that the film was entertaining and had a good message.
I hope that the personality of the show is conveyed properly and that everyone will enjoy it. Thank you very much. "Gangnam B-Side" Disney Plus
