South Korea's ruling party cooperates sincerely with house searches related to Myung Tae-gyun allegations
South Korea's ruling party, the People Power Party, stated on the 27th that it had "cooperated sincerely in accordance with procedures" with the prosecutors' search of its offices.
The prosecution is investigating Kim Young-seon, a central figure in the allegations of "official interference" in the 2022 local and by-elections.
The party is currently investigating former lawmaker Sun and former lawmaker Myung Tae-gyun, and on the same day, it conducted an investigation into the Organization Bureau office at the People Power Party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, and the Planning and Coordination Bureau office at the National Assembly building.
The searches lasted for one and a half hours and two and a half hours, respectively. In the presence of Kim Sang-wook, a former member of the legal profession and a lawmaker from the same party, the prosecution searched the computers used in both offices.
"The prosecution conducted a long and detailed investigation," Rep. Kim said, adding, "The party has been very cooperative and our party has been very supportive.
"We have absolutely nothing to hide," he emphasized. The party initially took the position that it could not submit documents to the prosecutors' request without a search warrant, citing confidentiality.
The party's legal advisory committee chairman, Rep. Joo Jin-woo, also issued a statement while the search was underway, saying, "The content and scope of the warrant,
"We will consider how to enforce the order and handle it in accordance with the law and principles," he said. A senior official from the leadership said, "It is more beneficial to resolve unnecessary disputes early, and the truth will come out through an investigation."
The party is cooperating with the prosecutors' requests for documents, but seems to be nervous about the repercussions of this investigation. Myung, a political broker, is expected to be a candidate for the 2022 National Assembly.
Suspicions have been raised that opinion polls were conducted in favor of certain candidates in by-elections and other events. The search warrant presented by the prosecution on that day contained documents related to the nomination process for seven people, including former Rep. Kim, as well as party affairs documents.
Audit documents were listed as a target.
