The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on the 30th that the Japanese government will provide support to the Philippines, Mongolia and the Philippines before March of next year through the Government Security Capacity Enhancement Assistance (OSA) system.
According to the report, the aid amount is about 5 billion yen, and items will be provided according to the circumstances of each country.
Prior to this, the Japanese government decided to provide a coastal surveillance radar to the Philippines, which is in an escalating conflict with China in the South China Sea. The Philippines was also a target of Japan's OSA last year.
In addition, the United States plans to provide air traffic control-related equipment to Mongolia, and equipment that can contribute to maritime security to Indonesia and Djibouti.
The OSA, which was established last year, differs from previous Official Development Assistance (ODA), which was limited to non-military areas, in that it is a framework that allows for direct support to the military of a like-minded country.
The main idea of the agreement is to provide equipment to the military forces of countries that share Japan's values, such as democracy and the rule of law, in order to improve their capabilities.
