Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with Lee Cheol, the governor of Gyeongbuk Province, on the 1st and said that he supports the administrative integration of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, but is concerned about the phenomenon of centralization within the region.
He cited the example of a local currency that was introduced in Myeon, a district in Yeoncheon County, during his time as governor of Gyeonggi Province, and said that the integration process will help to stimulate the local economies of districts.
In the morning, Chairman Lee Jae Myung visited the North Gyeongsang Provincial Office in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, and met with North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheol. On this day, the party also welcomed Lee Yong Soo, Chairman of the North Gyeongsang Provincial Party, and Governor Lee Cheol.
Representative Moo Mi-ae, Lee Hae-sik, chief secretary to the party leader, and Kim Tae-seong, chief executive officer of the party leader, participated in the meeting. From North Gyeongsang Province, Vice Governor for Economy Yang Geum-e, Kim Ho-jin, chief of the keynote office, and Kim Min-Seok, chief of the policy office, participated.
Lee said he supports the issue of administrative integration, which is the biggest pending issue in the Daegu-North Gyeongsang region, and said, "I pledged during the presidential election that in the long term, Daegu (North Gyeongsang and) North Gyeongsang must be integrated."
He added, "Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongju should be integrated and the Chungcheong region, Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and Honam region should be created, but the issues are financial independence, administrative autonomy and decentralization."
However, Lee expressed concern about the phenomenon of concentration within regions that may occur during the integration process. He said, "I am also concerned about the disappearance of small regions as a result of this (administrative integration). For example, if we were to integrate, the cities, counties, and wards in the Gyeongbuk region would
"I think that the small units will be absorbed, but I think that issue needs to be addressed," he said. On the other hand, Lee said, "Even in the integration, there will be centralization, but we need to ensure that small units can survive.
"One way to do that is to have a local currency that can circulate within the community," he said. "We can increase fiscal spending, turn it into a local currency, and circulate it in the community."
Lee also added that local currencies are effective, citing the example of a local currency he introduced in Seongsan-myeon, Yeoncheon-gun, when he was governor of Gyeonggi-do.
The policy was put into place for five years, then extended to 10 years," he said, but added, "A beauty salon has opened in the neighborhood, and the population is growing, so you can't say it hasn't had an effect."
Lee is using it in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province, as a long-term plan to revitalize small-scale local economies.
The branch office said, "There is a lot of abandoned farmland (in North Gyeongsang Province)," and added, "We are currently facing a power shortage, so why are we abandoning this? It is a huge resource."
He also said, "We should give some of the shares to the neighboring residents and make it like Sinan County." In addition, the Gyeongju Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) related support budget and the Gyeongbuk region
The establishment of a medical university was also discussed. Meanwhile, in the afternoon, Representative Lee traveled to Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do and chaired a meeting of the Traditional Market Merchants Association at Jukdo Market, where he spoke about issues such as public welfare competitions and road safety.
I plan to listen.
