According to South Korean news agency Yonhap News, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council (NSC) said,
In response to a question from Yonhap News Agency about the lifting of martial law in South Korea, he said, "We believe that President Yoon Seok-yeol has changed course from the 'concerning declaration of martial law' to lifting martial law.
"I'm relieved that the vote of the South Korean National Assembly to lift the ban was respected," he said. "Democracy is the foundation of the U.S.-ROK alliance," he said, adding, "We will continue to monitor the situation closely."
The U.S. government used the expression "concerns" regarding the declaration of martial law and stated that "democracy is the foundation of the U.S.-ROK alliance," indirectly expressing its negative view of the declaration.
The spokesman also stated, "The United States was not informed of this announcement (the declaration of emergency martial law) in advance," clarifying that there was no coordination between the United States and South Korea regarding the declaration of martial law.
