National Assembly Speaker Woo Sik: ”Aren't you afraid of the power of the people, history, and the judgment of the people and the world? I want you to vote” (South Korea)
On the 7th, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik said to People Power Party lawmakers who did not participate in the vote on the impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol, "We are afraid of the judgment of history, the people, and the world.
"The Republic of Korea is a country that the people have protected. The Republic of Korea has overcome the pain of colonialism, war, division and dictatorship to become a nation that has risen to the top," Woo said in the National Assembly plenary session that day.
"The power that has made Korea a progressive nation came from the people," he said. "The president's declaration of emergency law is a denial of this history and a major blow to the pride of the people.
"It is not right. It is a democracy that was built over a long period of time with the blood and tears of the people. That is why people around the world look upon the Republic of Korea as an amazing country that has progressed to become a developed nation among countries that were once colonized."
Chairman Woo said, "By encouraging such extraordinary views, K-pop, K-TV series, K-food, and K-culture that are shocking the world are being created. This is not the success of one political faction.
"It is not because of the government's economic growth and democracy, but because of the people's efforts to build it. No one should be harmed," he said.
The people and the world were astonished to see how weak the government was. However, in the Republic of Korea, citizens gathered in front of the National Assembly two and a half hours after the emergency martial law was declared, and the National Assembly members entered the plenary session and lifted it.
"The world is astonished at the resilience of Korea's democracy," he said. "There is no precedent for this in history. I am astonished at the resilience of Korea's democracy, which is unprecedented in the world. This resilience is something I am very grateful for.
"We must build this great Republic of Korea together, regardless of political affiliation," Woo said. "This is the process of dealing with the aftermath of the state of emergency."
"How will the people and the world view this situation of not participating in the vote?" he said. "If we show the world the image of a Republic of Korea that is out of control and a weak Republic of Korea democracy,
"If my reputation is tarnished, will I be able to take responsibility? I will do everything in my power to appeal to all the members of the People's Power Diet. I ask you to participate in the vote," he added.
Prior to this, Chairman Woo said to Justice Minister Park Seong-je, who had left the room during the vote on the bill to prosecute the wife of Kim Gun-Hee, "I will not handle the case in the National Assembly.
When we think about it, it is the principle that the State Councillors should be in their proper positions and treat the people with respect. I was also really angry when the National Assembly was trampled on with military boots a few days ago, but I don't think it's right for State Councillors to behave in such a way.
"This is arrogance and a disregard for the Diet and the people. The Diet will take appropriate measures against him for failing to fulfill his responsibilities," he added.
He added.
