On 24th, Yuri starred in the tvN drama ‘Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin’ (director Yoon Sang-ho / script Park Ji-hyun / project CJ ENM), which ended with a happy ending in which the evil protagonists Dong-man (Song Young-chan) and Ji Myung-seop (Lee Hak-ju) were exonerated and their normal lives were restored. The show ended on a high note with a happy ending that restored normalcy to the drama house.
In particular, Ahn So-yun, played by Yuri in the last episode, subdued Ji Myung-seob when he stormed out with a long gun in his hand. A short time later, following her promotion to inspector, she visited the ossuary of her sister Ahn Da-yun (Kim Ye-na) and showed how she unburdened her heart by vowing never to cry again, leaving the viewers with a deep lingering impression.
<Yuri's full answer to each question is as follows.
1. Why did you decide to appear in ‘Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin’ and how do you feel now that the show has finished airing?
I decided to act in the drama because I found the freshness of the parole examiner, the character of ‘Ahn So-yun’, and the action scenes so exciting that I found them fascinating. I still have vivid memories of starting filming with all my heart in the cold winter of last year, but I feel a great deal of regret that the film has already come to an end. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the viewers who have sent me so much love and interest, and I hope to see you again in the next film with an even more matured appearance. We look forward to your continued support!
2. ‘Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin’ ranked first for 12 consecutive episodes from its first broadcast to the final episode in the same time slot, including the cable channel, and ranked second among tvN's Monday-Tuesday dramas aired this year in terms of average viewer ratings, a significant record. What are your thoughts on this?
From the moment I read the scripts, each character stood out for their charms, and it seems that viewers also enjoyed the breathing and team play between the characters. I am very grateful that they found the process of fighting social evils by joining forces so poignant and sent me a lot of support.
3. You took on an action genre that you had never tried before, and it was hailed as a new discovery for Kwon Yuri. How was your first attempt at action?
This is the first time I have tried action in earnest, but I felt that my experience of practising choreography for group dances on stage when I was a singer helped me a lot in matching my breathing and showing my spontaneous power in the action scenes. If I get a chance in the future, I would like to train more and try more dynamic actions.
4. There were many cathartic scenes, especially the chase scene with Choi Jung-hak (Nam Min-woo), the brawl at the Changju Restaurant and the arrest scene with Im Jung-kyun (Im Hyou). You utilised the terrain and other aspects of the site for action shots, and improvised many parts on the spot, but what was the most memorable episode during the filming?
The arrest scene of Im Jung-kyun is the most memorable. We originally had a long sequence prepared, but we had to improvise the action to suit the situation on set, but it gave the scene a realistic feel and it turned out well. Thanks to the consideration of the other actors and the director, we were able to finish the shoot without injury. We then prepared more dynamic movements in the practice room. Due to the conditions, we couldn't try out everything or incorporate it into the broadcast, but the experience of training and practising in such a way really helped me learn and remember.
5. The ‘parole team’ with Lee Han-shin (Ko Su) and Choi Hwa-ran (Baek Ji-won), the conflict with Ji Myung-seop and the chemistry with junior detective Kim Joo-mok (Na Hyun-woo), all of which led to good reactions. What was the atmosphere like?
The acting transformation of Koh Soo senior, who played the role of Lee Han-shin, was very fresh and fun. It was my second time working with Baek Ji-won, who played the role of Choi Hwa-ran, and I was so impressed by her sensitive acting in every scene that I was sad to see the filming end. I spent the most time with Na Hyun-woo, who played the role of Kim Joo-mok, and I remember that we were able to communicate well and share good influences while relying on each other.
6. During the making of the filming, I was impressed by the way you constantly communicated with director Yoon Sang-ho while creating the scenes. How did you and director Yoon Sang-ho breathe together?
The director was tireless and energetic on set, and that energy blended directly into the film. I learnt a lot from his leadership and positive attitude. I am very grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to take on the new challenge of playing the role of ‘Ahn So-yun’, an ace detective in the Regional Investigation Unit.
7. in addition to ‘Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin’, she was nominated for Best New Actress at the 45th Blue Dragon Film Awards for her lead role in the film ‘Dolphin’, which was released earlier this year, and participated in the 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) with the film ‘Mist’ (tentative title), which is due to be released in theatres. She continues to be active in a wide variety of activities while shifting between drama and film. What is the driving force behind your constant activities?
The biggest driving force is the love, interest and support of my fans. I am grateful for their tireless love. I am just so grateful. When I don't have enough, they love me in their own way and give me encouragement, which gives me the courage I didn't have and makes me want to do well.
8. What does ‘Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin’ mean to you, and if you were to give a final greeting to the viewers who loved the drama and Ahn So-yun, what would it be?
Parole Examiner Lee Han-shin is a new challenge for me and a work that has allowed me to grow once more. I would like to thank the many viewers who supported Ahn So-yun and loved our parole team. We will see you again with a better appearance.
Meanwhile, Yuri was officially invited to the ‘Korean Cinema Today - Panorama’ section of the 29th Pusan International Film Festival (BIFF) and will meet the audience as ‘Min’ in the film ‘Mist’, which will be released in 2025.
