South Korean Unification Minister Kim Young-ho said on the 2nd, "We will first focus on 'stable management of the situation on the Korean Peninsula,'" and added, "'Two hostile nations' does not exist in our dictionary of unification."
Minister Kim stressed the direction of the new year's work. In his New Year's address, Minister Kim said, "Before I give my New Year's greetings, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Jeju Air passenger plane accident.
I would like to express my deepest condolences and sympathies to the victims and their families." He continued, "Thanks to your dedication and hard work last year, our nation's journey toward unification has continued unwavering.
"I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all members of our Unification Family who have worked hard in their own positions," he said.
Regarding the outlook for this year, Kim said, "North Korea has a 'hostile two-pronged
"With the change in leadership of the United States and other neighboring countries, we are facing the possibility of changes in foreign policy and the dynamics of the Korean Peninsula," he said.
"Domestically, the public's interest and awareness of the need for unification is gradually waning," he said. "We are facing extraordinary obstacles.
I hope that this year will be one in which we wisely overcome these difficult circumstances and achieve the development of a unified ecosystem."
